Toyota launches ‘Suhana Summer’ Service Campaign

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today announced the start of its yearly service campaign Suhana Summer - a service campaign with free check up for all Toyota models - across its dealerships in India.

The month-long campaign will be conducted across Toyota dealerships between March 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010. Toyota has set a benchmark in the automobile industry for its quality products and more so for its exceptional after sales service. Keeping this tradition alive, Toyota has launched this service campaign in 98 dealerships across India.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director, TKM, said, “Toyota, having pioneered in the ‘Customer First’ approach throughout the world, has timed this service campaign to correspond with the vacation season in India. The campaign will help our customers to gear up their vehicles for long journeys, ensuring safe, comfortable and fun filled drives during summer vacation”.

Under this campaign, all Toyota customers will be eligible for a free 30 point check up of their Toyota vehicles and an option to choose from a broad spectrum of service parts packages, which include most of the periodic and general maintenance repair related parts.

All customers participating in the campaign by purchasing any of the packages will be eligible for exciting lucky draw prizes which range from over 30 Gift Hampers and a host of other assured gifts on various packages.

Comprehensive Analysis Raises Concern About Professor’s U.S. Congressional Testimony, ABC News Segment

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces U.S. sales subsidiary Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. replicated on March 8 (in the U.S.) a recent demonstration of an “unintended acceleration” event by Professor David Gilbert of Southern Illinois University of the United States. The replication—using representative vehicles of other makes during a live media webcast—raises serious concerns about the validity, methodology and credibility of a February 22 (in the U.S.) demonstration by Gilbert shown in a broadcast and website segment of ABC News.

Based on a comprehensive analysis that covered in-house tests and an ongoing evaluation of Toyota’s electronic throttle control system by leading engineering and scientific consulting firm Exponent, Inc., Toyota has concluded the following:

  • In the Gilbert demonstration, the vehicle’s electronics were rewired and reengineered in multiple ways, in a specific sequence and under conditions that are virtually impossible to occur in real-world conditions without visible evidence.
  • In the Gilbert demonstration, the Toyota vehicle electronic systems were actively manipulated to mimic a full-throttle condition.
  • Substantially similar results could be successfully created in vehicles made by other manufacturers.

Toyota has concluded that the unrealistic sequence and nature of artificially manipulated faults created by Gilbert do not provide evidence that a characteristic defect exists in a Toyota, Lexus or any other brand vehicle. In fact, engineers at Exponent, as well as engineers at Toyota, have reviewed and replicated Gilbert’s demonstration with substantially similar results in representative vehicles of other makes.

At Toyota’s request, Dr. J. Christian Gerdes, associate professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University and director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS), conducted an independent review of testimony and a preliminary report Gilbert recently presented to the U.S. Congress.

Exponent and Gerdes’ separate findings were demonstrated in the webcast, during which the accelerator circuitry of a Toyota Avalon large sedan, as well as a sampling of well-regarded and popular competitive makes, was rewired and manipulated as Gilbert did in his demonstration.

Previously, at a hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on March 2, TMC Executive Vice President Takeshi Uchiyamada testified that: “As a result of our extensive testing, we do not believe sudden unintended acceleration because of a defect in our ETCS (electronic throttle control system) has ever happened. However, we will continue to search for any event in which such a failure could occur. In order to further validate the safety of our ETCS, we have asked Exponent, a world-class engineering and scientific consulting firm, to conduct its own independent, comprehensive evaluation.”

An interim report by Exponent has already been provided to the U.S. Congress. As soon as Exponent has completed its evaluation, the final results, as well as data and information necessary for validation by others, will be made public.

By using advanced technologies such as event data recorders and others, TMC intends to further heighten the level of safety in its vehicles.

2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition

When the 2006 Corvette Z06 was introduced, it represented the closest connection to the Corvette race cars ever. The 2009 Corvette ZR1 closed the gap between racing and production even further. This year, Corvette continues its tradition of track-to-street technology transfer with the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition.

“Designed to further incorporate technology developed through racing, the Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Corvette’s first race in the 24 Hours of LeMans,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet General Manager. “With a limited production of 500 units, this car is a must-have for the true Corvette collector and driving enthusiast.”

The Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is another example of the expanded Corvette line-up. Five years ago, customers had the choice of a Corvette coupe or convertible. With the addition of the Z06, Grand Sport coupe and convertible and ZR1, Corvette enthusiasts now have more choices than ever.

“For track use, the Z06 Carbon is the best balanced Corvette yet. It combines the lightweight and naturally-aspirated Z06 engine with the road-holding and braking of the ZR1,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer. “For technical tracks like Laguna Seca, the Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off the Z06 lap time.”

This limited edition Z06 will boast Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with specific dark gray metallic calipers. These powerful brakes were first introduced on the ZR1. Black 20-spoke 19-inch front/20-inch rear wheels complement the car’s Michelin PS2 tires. Other mechanical features include Magnetic Selective Ride Control for the first time on the Z06 and enhanced cooling. The car also features a special carbon pattern engine cover.

The Corvette Z06 Carbon will be available in two colors: Inferno Orange and the all-new Supersonic Blue. Black headlamps and mirrors, a ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood, and black carbon fiber rockers and splitter enhance the Z06’s dynamic design and reduce mass and aerodynamic lift. For track events, customers can also install the Euro-styled racing numbers that come with each car.

The Z06 Carbon’s ebony leather and suede interior is complemented by blue or orange seat stitching to match the exterior color chosen. Other features include a unique steering wheel emblem, sill plate and logoed headrest. The suede used on the steering wheel, shifter, seat inserts, armrests and doors add to the luxury of this limited edition Z06.

An optional Z07 performance package that includes the mechanical upgrades introduced on the Z06 Carbon can be added to a regular 2011 Z06. This package also includes Competition Gray 20-spoke wheels and all the chassis and cooling upgrades.

The CFZ Z06 carbon fiber package includes black carbon fiber rockers, splitter and roof panel with the full-width body color spoiler. It can also be purchased with or without the Z07 package on regular Z06 models.

The 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition, as well as the new Z07 and CFZ Z06 option packages will be available in late summer.

Motor Trend Declares “Buick is Back!”

For the first time in 28 years, Buick dominates the cover of Motor Trend magazine, along with a headline declaring “Buick is Back!” The April issue of the premier automotive publication features photos of the Buick LaCrosse, Regal Turbo and Regal GS Concept and touts the growing momentum behind Buick.

The April 2010 edition of the magazine includes two Buick features; a drive review of the new 2011 Regal called “International Rescue” and “Trading Places,” a comparison of the 2010 LaCrosse and the 2010 Lexus ES350, in which LaCrosse emerges the winner. The Century T-Type was the last Buick to grace cover of Motor Trend in August of 1982. The April issue of Motor Trend is now available on newsstands.

“We are thrilled to be honored with the placement of Buick models on the cover of Motor Trend,” said John Schwegman, U.S. marketing vice president, Buick GMC. “The declaration that ‘Buick is Back’ attests to the transformation of the Buick brand and the buzz building for the LaCrosse and Regal. In his review of the 2011 Regal, Motor Trend Editor-in-Chief Angus Mackenzie says the Regal “is the first Buick in history with internationally chic sheetmetal and sophisticated road manners to match,” and that it “is truly likely to appeal to young, affluent, trend-setting import buyers.”

Available in dealerships this spring, the Regal is the next chapter in Buick’s transformation. The vehicle features a dynamic driving experience with a standard 2.4L Ecotec direct injected engine rated at an estimated 182 horsepower (136 kW). Also available later this year is the 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged and direct injected engine rated at an estimated 220 horsepower (164 kW). Customers will also experience many advanced personal technologies, making it a premium sport sedan without the premium price. Pricing for the Regal starts at $26,995.

The LaCrosse, a luxury sedan completely redesigned for 2010, continues to attract buyers to Buick and the 2010 model is selling three times faster than its predecessor. The car has been praised for its exterior styling and luxurious interior and features a suite of advanced personal technologies and safety features that rate among the best in the industry. In addition to two fuel-saving V-6 engines, a new fuel-efficient, direct inject Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder engine will be available with the LaCrosse CX model this spring. LaCrosse will be the only sedan in its segment with an available four cylinder engine.

GM Statement Regarding Dealer Arbitration

General Motors is taking a major step toward its goal of creating positive, lasting relationships with its dealers.

GM carefully reviewed each of the approximately 1100 dealer reinstatement claims that were filed with the American Arbitration Association. We conducted these individual reviews, keeping in mind our goal of moving quickly and effectively to complete the overall arbitration process, and determined that we would send more than 600 Letters of Intent to the involved dealers. The Letter of Intent contains our usual core business criteria. This action will allow these dealers to conduct normal dealership operations as soon as they comply with the terms of the Letter of Intent.

“We are eager to restore relationships with our dealers, and get back to doing what we do best – selling cars and taking care of customers,” said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. “The arbitration process creates uncertainty in the market. We believe issuing these Letters of Intent is good for our customers, our dealers and GM.”

Service and Parts Operations (SPO) Becomes Customer Care and Aftersales

Service Parts Operations, long the name that described ACDelco, Goodwrench and GM Performance Parts, is being renamed Customer Care and Aftersales.

“Our new name better reflects GM’s critical role in customer retention and service after the sale,” said Steve Hill who was named this week to succeed Kevin Williams, who was named President and General Manager of GM Canada.

“It’s going to be less about selling parts and more about taking care of customers, hence the name customer care,” Hill said of the former SPO. “All successful organizations are centered on the customer. If you’re not customer focused, you’re just not going to win.”

Hill noted the importance of past Saturn, Hummer and Saab owners. “If we’re not taking care of these customers and their service needs, they’ve told us flat-out to forget about selling them a new car. If you’re not meeting their needs, there’s a zero chance of selling them a new car. Our name change is a signal that we’ve changed the way we’re doing business.”

Camaro Sets Pace for the U.S. Sports Car Segment

Chevrolet Camaro extended its lead in the U.S. sports car segment in February, posting 6,482 total sales. This is a 21 percent increase over January results, and marks the ninth consecutive month that Camaro total sales outpaced sports car models including the Ford Mustang, Nissan 370Z, and Dodge Challenger.

Consumers have bought nearly 75,000 Camaros since it was launched in early 2009, and demand continues to hold steady even in winter months.

“Traditionally, we expect to see a dip in sales for rear-wheel-drive performance cars over the winter,” says John Fitzpatrick, Chevrolet Performance Cars marketing manager. “But, demand for Camaro shows no sign of slowing down, particularly in the Sun Belt”

Texas, California and Florida account for about 25 percent of all Camaro retail sales, and six of the top 10 U.S. dealers for Camaro sales are located in Texas.

Importantly, Camaro continues to attract new customers to Chevrolet. Of Camaro buyers who traded-in a vehicle at the time of purchase, about half traded-in a non-GM vehicle.

“We’re beginning to see owners of performance cars like Mustang and 350Z trading in their cars in to get behind the wheel of a Camaro,” says Fitzpatrick. “To me, that’s an incredible testament of the appeal, and performance, of Camaro.”

The Oshawa Assembly Plant has been running Saturday overtime since June 2009 to keep up with demand for Camaro. According to recently released data, Camaro led the segment in consumer retail registrations for 2009 calendar year.
